It is impossible to describe the anticipation in the audience adequately. I attended the Los Angeles premiere of the film, in 1968, at the Pantages Theater. Kubrick's film is almost unique in enhancing the music by its association with his images. When classical music is associated with popular entertainment, the result is usually to trivialize it (who can listen to the “William Tell Overture'' without thinking of the Lone Ranger?). The music is associated in the film with the first entry of man's consciousness into the universe -and with the eventual passage of that consciousness onto a new level, symbolized by the Star Child at the end of the film. Now consider Kubrick's famous use of Richard Strauss' “Thus Spake Zarathustra.'' Inspired by the words of Nietzsche, its five bold opening notes embody the ascension of man into spheres reserved for the gods. At the same time, there is an exaltation in the music that helps us feel the majesty of the process. And so, through a peculiar logic, the space hardware moves slowly because it's keeping the tempo of the waltz. We are asked in the scene to contemplate the process, to stand in space and watch. Obviously such a docking process would have to take place with extreme caution (as we now know from experience), but other directors might have found the space ballet too slow, and punched it up with thrilling music, which would have been wrong. The Johann Strauss waltz “Blue Danube,'' which accompanies the docking of the space shuttle and the space station, is deliberately slow, and so is the action. It wants to be sublime it brings a seriousness and transcendence to the visuals.Ĭonsider two examples. The classical music chosen by Kubrick exists outside the action. North's score, which is available on a recording, is a good job of film composition, but would have been wrong for “2001" because, like all scores, it attempts to underline the action - to give us emotional cues. Although Kubrick originally commissioned an original score from Alex North, he used classical recordings as a temporary track while editing the film, and they worked so well that he kept them. No little part of his effect comes from the music. Alone among science-fiction movies, “2001" is not concerned with thrilling us, but with inspiring our awe. He reduces each scene to its essence, and leaves it on screen long enough for us to contemplate it, to inhabit it in our imaginations. This is the work of an artist so sublimely confident that he doesn't include a single shot simply to keep our attention. The success of this is clear, in scenes with no dialogue the music is much clearer, and at times it is more like watching a ballet than a film. The genius is not in how much Stanley Kubrick does in "2001: A Space Odyssey," but in how little. The music in 2001 was intended to be an integral part of the story from the very beginning, as Kubrick did not want to tell a traditional science fiction story. Finally, when encountering the Monoliths, there is Gyorgy Ligeti’s Lux Aeterna, a hauntingly beautiful piece. During the long, beautiful scenes of spacecraft in flight we are treated to Johann Strauss’ “The Blue Danube,” possibly the most famous waltz there is. But there is much more to the film’s music that just the opening. Even for those who have never seen the film, the pounding drums of Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra instantly bring to mind images of monoliths and apes clubbing each other with bones. The film featured incredible realism in it’s special effects and designs, and most importantly for us, featured an incredible and memorable score. His terrifying encounter with the Monolith known as Big Brother sends him on am impossible journey.Ībout The 2001: A Space Odyssey Movie Theme Song He is almost successful, but the sole survivor, Dave Bowman disconnects HAL and continues the mission alone. When the astronauts discuss what to do about HAL, he decides to eliminate them. The two awake members of the crew slowly begin to distrust their computer, HAL, who begins to sabotage the mission. The spacecraft Discovery is sent to investigate, a mission that will take many years. After the Tycho Monolith is excavated, it sends a powerful radio message out towards Jupiter. Produced in conjunction with the novel in 1968, 2001 tells the story of Man’s dealings with the mysterious Monolith, from it’s influences on our ancestors at the Dawn of Man, to it’s secretive presence beneath the lunar crater Tycho and ultimately to it’s final resting place in orbit of Io. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a seminal work of science fiction cinema, created by Stanley Kubrick in conjunction with the famous author Arthur C Clarke (who also wrote the novel).

But considering their history and Swift’s penchant for writing songs inspired by close friends’ love lives, it’s not a far stretch to declare “When Emma Falls in Love” her and Stone’s friendship anthem. Other possibilities include Jane Austen’s classic novel Emma, or even her Valentine’s Day co-star Emma Roberts. Of course, since Swift doesn’t give a last name in the song, fans may never be completely certain that she’s singing about Stone. Some fans also speculated that it could be a reference to Stone’s Oscar-winning performance in La La Land, but considering the film didn’t come out until 2015, this is likely not the case. The 1 bestselling Magic Tree House series is ready to whisk you away through time with Jack and Anniethis time to the snowy. The lyric “Well, she’s so New York when she’s in LA” could also be referring to Stone, as the two were spotted hanging out in New York multiple times during the period when Swift was recording Speak Now, even though she resided in Los Angeles at that time. And while they weren’t dating when Swift wrote the song, Stone’s ex-boyfriend Andrew Garfield once said in an interview that “she was like being bathed in sunlight.” Fans also traced the “Little Miss Sunshine” title back to Stone, as the actor sang Natasha Bedingfield’s seminal hit “Pocketful of Sunshine” in her 2010 breakout film Easy A. Stone is notably close to her mother, having taken her to multiple award shows and publicly stood by her during her “terrifying” breast cancer diagnosis. The most evident reference to Stone comes when Swift sings, “When Emma falls in love, she calls up her mom / Jokes about the ways that this one could go wrong / She waits and takes her time, ’cause Little Miss Sunshine always thinks it’s gonna rain.” When the re-recording came out on July 7, fans didn’t receive certified confirmation, but the song’s lyrics do contain sly references to Stone that make this theory probable.Īt its core, “When Emma Falls in Love” is an ode to friendship, with Swift recalling the ways that “Emma” behaves when she falls in love and experiences heartbreak, and most importantly, how she affects the boys that go head-over-heels for her. When the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) track list was first announced, Swifties immediately speculated that “When Emma Falls in Love” was about the Oscar winner given their long-standing friendship, which particularly blossomed as Swift was making Speak Now. The tale of Demon Stone goes this way: three clueless heroes-each with his own considerable emotional baggage-embark on a journey of self-discovery, managing en route to unwittingly loose upon the world a two-headed terror from years gone by. Luckily, it manages to outdo the game depiction of that Tolkien classic, though regrettably, there is nothing to be done about the rocker's distasteful likeness. It feels like Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (blah), and one of the three main playable characters looks like Scott Stapp, formerly of Creed (double blah). This led to the publication of Neverwinter Nights in 2002, a game also developed by Bioware. In 2001, facing financial difficulties, Hasbro sold 100% of Hasbro Interactive to French software concern Infogrames Entertainment, SA in a US$100 million deal. As a result, the subsidiary Hasbro Interactive gained the right to use the Dungeons & Dragons game brand in their video game products. They in turn were acquired by Hasbro in 1999. Wizards of the Coast purchased TSR, the makers of Dungeons & Dragons, in 1997. Their next planned D&D video game, code-named "Jefferson," was canceled as a result of legal issues with Wizards of the Coast, the new rights holders to the D&D franchise. In 2003, Interplay ran into financial difficulties, resulting in the closure of Black Isle Studios. They also published the Baldur's Gate series developed by the Canadian company BioWare. Within Interplay, a division named Black Isle Studios used this license arrangement to develop a series of successful games based upon the two D&D settings. a license to use the Forgotten Realms and Planescape trademarks and associated properties for use in computer and video game products. TSR then divided the license among multiple publishers. After a successful run with their Gold Box series of games, SSI lost their exclusive license in 1994. (SSI) primarily because of their broader vision and their experience in computerized wargaming. At least ten different companies applied, including Electronic Arts and Origin Systems, but TSR awarded the contract to Strategic Simulations, Inc. TSR considered making their own video games and passed on the idea, and instead announced in 1987 that it was looking for a game development partner to make officially-licensed games. Up until 1987, a number of games inspired by Dungeons & Dragons had appeared, such as the Wizardry and Ultima series, but these were not licensed from TSR. The games, however, had nothing to do with the rules or any of the settings. The contract actually required some variations to the normal Intellivision title screens with the name being capitalized and the addition of the word 'cartridge'. The first Dungeons & Dragons licensed games were made by Mattel for the Intellivision. Please help update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information. Hasbro reclaiming the license in 2011 after 2009 lawsuit). The reason given is: Missing developments since 2002 (e.g. Balls Mahoney went straight for Homeless Jimmy, etc. The wrestlers had their targets selected. Once the security guard grabbed Messiah by the head and another shoved Supreme onto Kristi Myst, the ECW locker room cleared. But we did not think they would go to such lengths. Stephen DeAngelis had commented to someone earlier in the night, who relayed the message to XPW, that ECW was "ready" to combat XPW. The crowd popped when Kristi took off her outer shirt, Francine got in her face and all hell broke loose. Fans in the building and outside after the event had no idea about the "drunken fan hit Francine" story and told the story of what happened quite differently. A number of fans outside the arena thought Francine shoved or hit Kristi because she fell, but it was, in fact, Supreme who knocked her over. He yelled at Supreme, "Your career is done." Joey Styles then told the PPV audience that a drunk fan had attacked Francine. The live fans saw Dreamer approach Supreme. Tommy Dreamer and Justin Credible had been jawing in the ring and the ref informed them of what was going on and Dreamer left the ring. Francine then started shouting at Kristi Myst, angered that she was stealing her heat. Messiah and Supreme took off their inside out shirts planning to reveal their XPW logos when they were both grabbed by security guards. She stood at ringside and was taking off her shoe when Kristi Myst took off her outer shirt revealing the bikini top. George brought out the ladder and at one point Francine left the ring. Justin Credible and Francine hit the ring and Tommy Dreamer came out. Also, ECW ring announcer Stephen DeAngelis told someone earlier that "We hear XPW is going to try something during the main event and we are ready." Doc used his knowledge of XPW to get backstage access to the event. When XPW people arrived at the building they were immediately pointed out to ECW security and staff by a former employee and local promoter with a personal vendetta named Doc Marlee. XPW had been informed earlier in the week that ECW had requested extra security because they had feared XPW was "going to try something." Rumors even reached back to XPW that people thought Sabu and Supreme would be in the front row. This was all to be done in the interest of getting the name out there. Since we had no other means of advertising, we were going to have all the guys in the front row turn their shirts back to right side in and reveal the XPW logos. Kevin and other XPW employees had conversations with the guard and all was well. Half way through the show an Atlas security guard was sent to sit with them. Dynamite D, Chronic, White Trash Johnny Webb, Pat Hernandez, Steve Hernandez, and Kevin Kleinrock actually had seats right above the entranceway and could have easily bombarded entering wrestlers with drinks, food, signs, etc, or even cut the ECW banner, but did not. XPW did not interfere throughout the PPV. Additionally, when a limousine carrying Dynamite D, Patrick Hernandez, Homeless Jimmy, Steve Hernandez, and non-XPW employees arrived, they were met by Atlas Security and told to turn their shirts inside out. All of them were forced to turn their shirts inside out upon entering the building. XPW had Supreme, Kristi Myst, Homeless Jimmy, Kris Kloss, Kid Kaos, and The Messiah in the front row. No XPW t-shirts were allowed in the building. The plan was to display t-shirts and posters, and distribute flyers for the show.ĮCW security was extremely tight. XPW has attended house shows, PPVs, and television tapings of the WWF and WCW doing the exact same thing. XPW attended the ECW PPV to publicize their event next weekend at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Well, after reading the posts about it, I decided to look for it, and found it somewhere, and anyways, some good reading. It’s like the talent that got away.”Īnd now, here’s what’s happening across California: “There’d probably be many books written about him. “Manuel would’ve been part of something that is celebrated around the world,” Klein said. But the scholar still thinks Moreno should be better known, and feels that fame would’ve come he had joined Disney. Klein has authored articles on Moreno for the online publication Cartoon Research and stresses his career isn’t really a what-if, since Moreno found success. Moreno’s torch for Latino representation in the Times was being carried by another young Mexican immigrant: Alex Perez, who also started at the Junior Times before becoming a staff illustrator for the adult Times for 50 years. By then, the 19-year-old already worked for animation studios. The following year, the Times reported that Moreno held a screening of some of his “animated funnies” to members of the Junior Times Club. “Never has he missed a club art meeting, nor has he lost the gentleness and kindness that have always stamped him as a clean-cut sport.” “Manuel is now making a good salary, but has he forgotten us?” Aunt Dolly wondered that year. Moreno’s last illustration for the Times published in 1927, but he never abandoned the paper that gave him his break. “Already, you have the notion of a child who sees all the possibilities in the world, and he seems fearless.” “Manuel has not traveled the world, but he’s reading and illustrating it,” Klein added. “He looks like a child cartoonist when he first starts,” Klein said of Moreno, “but his level of talent accelerates so quickly that by the end of his run, he’s drawing at a professional level.” The professor praised the teen’s quick pivot to “continuity strips” - a story told over weeks - instead of one-off gags, citing a run where Keen and Feeble Tat fly to different countries. That’s how he found out that Moreno was probably the first Latino to pen his own regular comic strip in a major American newspaper, from 1924-26. Loyola Marymount animation professor Tom Klein is working on a biography of Moreno, whom he called “a figure who really deserved more and could’ve been so much more.” He plans to tell the history of animation in Los Angeles through his book, and has been in the proverbial salt mines for years. in the 1950s, left the world of cartoons, and ran a successful photo-processing store for decades. Disney animators who had worked with Moreno tried multiple times to recruit him to the Mouse House, but he instead took over his brother’s camera shop during World War II, then moved to his native Mexico to run an animation studio. He was a trusted supervisor for Walter Lantz in the 1930s, and also worked for MGM. Some became legends like Bill Melendez (who brought “Peanuts” to television), Phil Roman (whose animation studio long produced “The Simpsons”) and Disney stalwart X Atencio others might not get as much mainstream attention but are nevertheless respected by animation buffs. While Old Hollywood stereotyped Latinos or just ignored them (still does, alas), animation was a space where Latinos - particularly Mexican Americans - were able to flourish. It was his best attempt at tracking the meanderings of the Mississippi’s present and past bends, visualized as gorgeous maps. In a report for the US Army Corps of Engineers, in 1944 Fisk had completed a mammoth effort entitled, “Geological Investigation of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River”. By looking at the geologic evidence, you can even map many of the paths a river once took – like looking at the past lives of the waters, the river’s ghosts. Over time, the bends and curves of what seems like a static river snakes into new outlines. A river, big or small, doesn’t stay still – as its waters flow it carves out new paths in a route towards its ultimate destination. His ghosts were of the meandering Mississippi.
